book reviews - october '97

I am a bit behind in my reading this month, so this is a list of some new books that are at the top of my "to be read" list.

Boys Like Us: Gay Writers Tell Their Coming Out Stories
by Patrick Merla (Editor)
Avon Books, 1997
ISBN: 0-380-78835-7 (Paperback)

I have always been a bit of a sucker for a good "first experience" or "coming out" story, either fiction (one of my favourites has always been The Boys on the Rock by John Fox) or true life (for example Becoming a Man by Paul Monnette), so I thought I should give this book a try. It is a collection of essays by 29 gay writers especially written for this collection, released to coincide with National Coming Out Day (Oct 11, USA) and AIDS Awareness month.

Boys Like Us by Patrick Merla (Editor)
Avon Books, 1997

A re-release of the original story (with minor updates) of a guilt-ridden gay teenager living on a farm in New Mexico and the effects of the arrival of a preacher's son who is also gay, but is accepting of his gayness.

Viral Sex: The Nature of AIDS
by Jaap Goudsmit
OUP, 1997
ISBN: 0-195-09728-9 (Hardcover)

A new book on the origins of HIV by one of Europe's most prominent HIV researchers. Somewhat speculative and bound to be controversial, but definitely not "mad fringe" stuff.

Titan
by Stephen Baxter
Harper Prism, 1997
ISBN: 0-061-05259-0 (Hardcover)

I am not a regular sci-fi reader, but every so often I read a review that grabs my interest and wander into the genre for a change, and Titan made it onto my reading list because of a recent review in New Scientist (13 September, 1997) by Ian Stewart. It has no gay content, so probably shouldn't be listed here, but at least it shows that I have eclectic tastes (as if that was not obvious already!). The story is set in 2004 with the possibility of life on Titan discovered, but the US space program is in tatters and the government is in the grip of gun nuts and creationists - this does not sound like sci-fi to me!!
